30/07/2008   Royffe child abuse prosecution fails -

Ms Royffe was successfully defended by Andrew Campbell-Tiech QC and Andrew Jefferies at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

11 prosecution experts gave evidence at Ms Royffe's trial in which she was charged with two section 18 offences of violence towards her 9-month-old child, that an injury to her child's penis was a burn and that his arm was deliberately broken. Andrew Campbell-Tiech QC cross-examined, without the assistance of any defence expert, that the penile injury may have been the result of severe infection and raised doubts as to the timing of and mechanism causing the broken arm. There were also detailed bad character issues in respect of the child's father, a man the defendant had initially sought to protect by claiming, quite untruthfully, that he was absent during the relevant periods.
